Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy Note9, comes with some comprehensive spec sheet and powerful internals. The Galaxy Note9 may look familiar from the outside, especially when compared to last year’s Note8. So what improvements have it got, compared to its predecessor? Well, let’s find out just that in this article.
Bluetooth-enabled S Pen
The Galaxy Note9’s S Pen is indeed a unique selling point for the device. The S Pen now uses Bluetooth LE connectivity. The Note9’s S Pen is equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy and a solitary button to enable some neat features. The S Pen can now wirelessly communicate with the phone which makes it more interesting than before.
The button on the S Pen can, now, function as a remote shutter while taking photos. If you present a slideshow using Samsung’s DeX interface, the S Pen doubles as a clicker, with an ability to change slides. There are also controls for swiping media in the built-in Gallery app, as well as videos on YouTube. And the S Pen’s supercapacitor charges in just 40 seconds inside the phone, allowing you to use it for 30 minutes before needing to top it off again.
Intelligent Camera
The camera on the Galaxy Note9 sports the same Galaxy S9 Plus’ dual-camera system, but it has two new advantages. The new AI function is a ‘Scene Optimizer’ which we’ve already seen on a few Android devices. The camera can now detect up to 20 scenes, ranging from pets to sunsets. The phone will, then, tune the contrast, exposure, color, and white balance to create a perfect photo.
There’s also a new function called ‘Flaw Detection’. The function will let you know if the camera lens is dirty, there’s too much backlight or someone’s blinking eyes. Flaw Detection lets you know if something’s wrong with the photo you just took, and what you can do to improve it. For example, if someone blinks in a group photo, Flaw Detection will recommend you to snap another photo before you miss the moment.
Largest Battery ever on a Note
After the whole Note 7 fiasco, Samsung decided to reduce the battery size in last year’s Galaxy Note8, capping it at just 3300mAh. However, Samsung is now, confident in its ability to maximize battery life without compromising safety. The Galaxy Note9, now, has a massive 4000mAh power pack. The battery helps the device stay up and running all day. We got around 5-6 hours on screen time with the phone. This is impressive for the current smartphones!
Water Carbon Cooling
Usually, a powerful phone is a hot one. Fortunately, Samsung has found an ingenious way to keep the Galaxy Note9 cool in any stressful situations. This year’s Galaxy Note has a technology that Samsung calls Water Carbon Cooling. This technology is designed to reduce overheating by as much as 21% during the graphics-intensive performance. We’re not totally sold on the effectiveness of this system; nevertheless, it’s comforting to know that a little extra consideration was taken toward preventing overheating.
DeX without a dock
Samsung DeX was introduced with the Galaxy S8, back in 2017. It would require accessories like the DeX Station and DeX Pad that turn them into makeshift desktop computers when connected to external displays. However, Samsung’s DeX products cost extra, but the competitors like Huawei have enabled DeX-like features with the simple use of an HDMI-to-USB-Type-C cable.

Fortunately, that’s exactly what Samsung has done with the Galaxy Note9 this time. With just a typical HDMI adapter, the Note9 will be able to deliver the same desktop-class experience. The Note 9’s touchscreen can also function as a trackpad or drawing surface while using DeX, which should make it an excellent all-in-one solution in a pinch.
