Huawei FreeBuds 3

Huawei has had quite a difficult year. The sanctions imposed by the US still apply to this day. Although Huawei can’t launch newer phones that doesn’t mean that they will back out. While they are getting the mess sorted, in the meantime they are focusing on bringing some amazing accessories and products for the people of Nepal. Among the slew of products launched, the Huawei Free Buds 3 is one of them. Getting past the obvious inspiration of this in-ear style bluetooth earphones, it has quite a lot to offer. So let’s take an initial look at the Huawei FreeBuds 3 and see what they are all about.

Initial Impressions

We got our hands on the Huawei Free Buds 3 almost two weeks ago and we have been using it ever since. The device comes in some good packaging with a white box depicting the product. Sliding out the protective sleeve using the pull tab, you are greeted with a white box with a magnetic lid. Pulling that off, you are immediately greeted by the product itself in its charging case. Below the device is another smaller box containing the charging cable. Lifting up the device and its holder, you will find a slew of paperwork including a scan code for the AI Life App. This app gives you more granular control over the device. More on this later!

Getting back to the Free Buds 3, it is more compact than I though. The tiny case houses the two earbuds with a long stem. Physically the case looks very classy with an all-white exterior. There is a Huawei logo in a silver badge right at the location where the hinge is. Below the case, there is a USB Type-C charging port with a light indicator. I am really glad that Huawei included the Type-C port instead of the traditional micro-USB one. Other than that there is a small button that can be used to pair the Buds with your mobile device. The button is so flush and tinny that you do have to scan the device thoroughly to find it.

Pooping up the lid we can see the earbuds in all there glory. There is also another charging indicator inside the case. Pulling them out and putting them on, they fit in my ear like a glove. Putting on some music, after a quick pairing session, I was completely blown away. It was by far the best wireless earphone I have tested, second only to the Airpods themselves.

The bass was there and the sound was pretty loud. The mids and highs were beautifully illustrated. I didn’t notice any distortion or clipping. This has largely to do with the amazing Huawei Kirin A1 chipset the device has to pack. It provides the necessary hardware for clean and clear audio. We will dive deeper into the audio quality of the device in our full review. So stay tuned for that!

Battery Life

Besides that, I would also like to talk about the battery capacity and connectivity if the Free Buds 3. The device packs the Bluetooth 5.1 with a good range. I didn’t face any sort of connection issues while using the buds. Talking about the battery, it has a 30mAh battery on the buds themselves while the case has a 410mAh cell. During my usage of two weeks, I had to charge the device only twice. That means a 1-week battery life on a single charge. This is quite impressive!

For charging the device uses a USB Type-C cable with 5V, 1.2A charging capacity. The buds also have wireless charging at 2W. This means I could use my Note 10+ to reverse wirelessly charge the Free Buds 3. I have tried it and it definitely works. If you are in a pinch, you can use the reverse wireless charging feature on most modern flagships to charge the buds.

Verdict: Huawei FreeBuds 3

The Huawei Free Buds 3 is an amazing in-ear wireless earphone for anyone looking to buy one. It packs a tried and tested design, amazing audio hardware, and long battery life to boast.

But at Rs 20,900, they definitely are not the cheapest pair available. There are cheaper alternatives available in the market but none are as good as the Huawei Free Buds 3. Once you get hooked to them, the other alternative sound very dull. So should you buy them? Well, that is an answer we will have to wait to give in our full review which by the way is coming out real soon. Until then one thing that I can say for sure is that it is one of the better soundings wireless earbuds available for an Android device.
