The Note lineup of smartphones has always been my favorite offering a balance between power and aesthetics. I was really disappointed when Samsung decided not to launch a Note device in 2021 and more so when I heard it was canceled. Come 2022, the Samsung Galaxy Note is back under the moniker of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. I know it has just been a year but I can’t help feeling excited and a tiny bit nostalgic.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with everything we expect from a Note device. You get a big-boxy design that screams “Made for Power User” on top of its lungs. It also comes with a 6.8 inches 1440 x 3088 pixels Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with the brightest display on any smartphone. It can pump out 1750 nits of peak brightness and supports the latest HDR10+ technology. Samsung also went all in this time offering a panel with a adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. These combinations are crazy for a smartphone! And to top it all off, the phone sports Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, both at the front and back, to protect its beautiful glass finish.
Power & Camera
Under the hood, the phone packs the latest 4nm Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor with 12GB of RAM and 256/512GB of storage. Yes, you absolutely read that correctly! This time Samsung has opted to give us the Snapdragon variant of the phone which is surprising. I am really excited to test this chipset out and can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Talking about the camera array on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, not a lot has changed from the S21 Ultra. The phone packs a quad-camera setup made by an f/1.8 108MP wide, f/4.9 10MP periscope telephoto, f/2.4 10MP telephoto, and f/2.2 12MP ultra-wide sensors. it also sports an f/2.2 40MP selfie front sitting inside an infinity-o cutout. Although the sensors are the same, Samsung has made leaps with software optimization and ML algorithms. We should see some amazing pictures, especially in low light.
Battery & Others
Other features of the phone include an IP68-rated dust and water-resistant body with an old gen ultra-sonic fingerprint scanner. The phone also would not be note-ish without a built-in S-Pen. And from experience, I can tell you that it is faster and smoother than ever. I was fascinated by how effortlessly the S-Pen was able to glide through the display. Exceptional!
And finally powering this phone all up is a 5000mAh battery which is a great inclusion. Samsung also brings back the 45W fast charging capability and 15W wireless charging capability. Although, you will need to buy supportable chargers to be able to make use of these features. I would have loved to see a charger included in the box or an option to get it without paying extra.
