Samsung has always been a star player in the smartphone flagship race. The flagships, despite having the high price point, are high on demand every time. But in countries like Nepal and India, we can see Samsung’s aggressive launch of the mid-rangers. Since the launch of J-Series smartphones in 2015, Samsung has been ruling the hearts of many despite having the competition from the Chinese smartphone manufacturers. For people who want premium smartphones on a budget, the Galaxy A-Series smartphones could be a better option. Recently, Samsung announced the Galaxy A8 star in the international market. The smartphone is now officially available here in Nepal!
Samsung Galaxy A8 Star Overview
The Galaxy A8 Star sports a tall 6.3-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, which is as tall as the Galaxy Note 8. The 18.5:9 aspect ratio display has the resolution of 1080x2220p and pixel density of 392ppi. This comes with narrow bezels and a 3D curved glass that is said provide for an immersive viewing experience.
In the camera department, the Galaxy A8 Star packs 16-megapixel and 24-megapixel sensors, both featuring f/1.7 aperture lenses on top. Samsung calls it the Dual Rear IntelliCam. This means the cameras will be able to adjust itself intelligently to take great pictures in any lighting condition. The cameras also get Live Focus feature that lets you manually adjust depth-of-field in real time. Like other Chinese smartphones, Samsung is also influenced by the rear dual camera setup this time.
The 24MP (f/2.0) selfie camera also gets a few editing features such as Pro Lightning and Smart Beauty. You also get AR stickers, stamps, and various other filters if you want to add some creativity to your photographs. Furthermore, there is a Face Unlock feature that lets you unlock the screen using your face.

Powering the Galaxy A8 Star is an octa-core Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon 660 chipset. The processor includes quad-core 2.2GHz Kryo 260 and quad-core 1.8GHz Kryo 260 CPUs. It is the same processor that powers the Nokia 7 Plus and Xiaomi Mi A2. The phone is available in either 4GB or 6GB of RAM variants.
The Galaxy A8 Star comes with an “Always On Display” and houses a pretty large 3700mAh battery. This is notably bigger than the Galaxy S9+ and falls just below the Galaxy Note 9. The dual-SIM (Nano) Samsung Galaxy A8 Star runs Android 8.1 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.0 UX on top.
Samsung has provided 64GB of onboard storage that is expandable up to 512GB via microSD card. In terms of connectivity, the Galaxy A8 Star has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, USB Type-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. The phone weighs 191 grams and measures in at 162.4×77.0x7.6mm.

The phone is available at the price point of Rs. 54,990 and you can expect some discount from the retailers. At this price point, the phone has competition with last year’s Galaxy S8 or even the OnePlus 5. The Huawei Nova 3 and the Vivo V11 also stands as a huge competition for this smartphone.
