Last month, Corning officially unveiled the sixth-generation of its Gorilla Glass. Corning claims the glass to be the most sturdy glass cover in the world. Two weeks later, Corning announced that Oppo will be the first smartphone manufacturer to adopt its latest breakthrough. Oppo’s new flagship utilizing Gorilla Glass 6 is dated for release in the coming weeks. The Chinese smartphone maker, however, is teasing its upcoming F9 phone and its display design on its Twitter feed.
Corning Inc. is a world-renowned manufacturer of specialty glass and ceramic materials. They produce Gorilla Glass as the preferred screen cover material for any electronic device with a display. Not only Samsung, Apple, Nokia and other phone manufacturers, but also Dell, Asus, HP and other international first-line PC manufacturers use Gorilla Glass in their notebooks to improve the look and durability of the screen.

Every phone user wants to find a way to protect the phone screen for longer usage time. But this problem worries not only regular users but the glass manufacturers as well. Research shows that consumers drop their smartphone on average seven times per year. To improve cover glass performance, Corning scientists developed a new material to address the challenge of multiple drops. Unveiled in July 2018, Gorilla Glass 6 is the company’s most durable cover glass to date. In lab tests, Gorilla Glass 6 survived 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces on average.
“We are excited to have Oppo adopt Gorilla Glass 6,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “Oppo’s new flagship model will provide consumers, who depend on their smartphone for every interaction in their digital lives, increased protection against multiple drops.”
In addition to using Gorilla Glass 6 in its latest flagship model, Oppo was also one of the leading adopters of Gorilla Glass 5, using it in the broad range of its smartphone portfolio, including the recently launched Oppo Find X and R15 models.
