If you are in the market to buy a new mid-tier smartphone under Rs 28,000, you will probably come across two smartphones, the Huawei Y9 2018 and the Oppo A83 2018. Both the phones are priced very closely! The Y9 2018 is priced at Rs 25,900 while the A83 2018 comes in at Rs 27,490. Besides the obvious price difference, how do these two phones differ from one another? Which is the best option among the two? Let’s find the answer to these questions in this detailed comparison.
Huawei Y9 2018 VS Oppo A83 2018
Both the Huawei Y9 2018 and the Oppo A83 2018 are gorgeous looking devices. Although the Y9 2018 and the A83 2018 claim to be made out of metal, the later feels a bit plasticky to the touch. Oppo has gone with the coated metal job, which is quite disheartening! The Y9 2018 on the other hands feels solid with a premium touch to it.
The two phones resemble each other at the front, with a near bezel-less display sitting at their core. Although, the Oppo A83 2018 just packs an HD display compared to a Full HD panel on the Y9 2018. That said, both the displays do look good for mid-tier smartphones of 2018. Under the hood, both the phones come power-packed with the A83 sporting a MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 processor while the Y9 2018 opts-in for an in-house Kirin 659 SoC. Both the phones perform extremely well and can bust through all the day-to-day tasks.

Moving on, at the software end, both the phones pack a custom skin on top of Android. Oppo has its Colors OS while Huawei boasts its EMUI. Both these skins are feature packed and are a far cry from stock Android. The similarities, however, stop there as the Y9 2018 runs Android 8.0 Oreo while the Oppo A83 is still stuck at Nougat. A sweet deal on Huawei’s behalf! (Pun intended) On the flip side, the Oppo A83 comes with a whopping 4GB RAM while the Y9 2018 comes in shy with 3GB of RAM. Although real-world performance is similar, it is always great to have some extra RAM.
And now let’s talk about the cameras! Both Oppo and Huawei are focusing on the audience who values camera. Oppo has the whole selfie expert and leader gimmick while Huawei focuses on an overall camera experience. And that show in these two phones! The Oppo A83 packs a selfie-focused camera while the Y9 2018 comes in strong with their quad-camera set up. Oppo definitely needs to pick up on that quickly! While the world, including Huawei, is moving towards dual-cameras, Oppo is still stuck with the traditional set of cameras. A bummer on Oppo’s part!
The image quality is no further from the number of cameras! The Huawei Y9 2018, with its quad-camera set up, combines a 13MP and a 2MP sensor at the rear. The cameras took some amazing pictures with great details, vibrancy, and depth. The Oppo A83, with its 13MP shooter, also took some good pictures but they were not comparable to that from the Y9 2018. The selfies, on the other hand, were a different story! The Oppo A83 took some amazing selfies with its 8MP front camera backed by AI. Though the 16+2MP front cameras on the Y9 2018 were no slouch, the A83 definitely has a slight edge here. Maybe it’s the AI technology! However, comparing selfies in low light condition, Huawei Y9 was better as it is backed up by a selfie toning LED flash adding vivid colors and better detail.

Speaking of which, the Huawei Y9 2018 supports an interesting feature called the AR lens. What this feature does is that it makes use of Augmented Reality (AR) to add a fun overlay on your face, very reminiscent of Snapchat. Besides that, you can change the background of your photo, in real time, which is a neat addition. You can also add a background image from your own gallery if you so choose to do so. This is a fun feature that makes using the cameras of the Y9 2018 more interesting. Moreover, the phone also packs a lot more features and mode in its camera app than its counterpart.
Another thing to talk about is the fingerprint scanner! The Huawei Y9 2018 offers a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner while the A83 2018 completely skips it. It is a shame that Oppo skipped out on such an essential sensor. Although, the phone does come with face unlock which the Y9 2018 also possess. The Oppo A83, on the flip side, takes the lead on the default storage. The phone packs 64GB of internal storage while the Y9 2018 comes with just 32GB. Both the phones, however, do support storage expansion via a micro-sd card.
And finally, let’s talk about the batteries on the two phones. The Huawei Y9 2018 packs a large 4000 mAh battery while the A83 2018 comes with a smaller 3180mAh battery. The real-world performance, just like the cell capacity, is better with the Y9 2018. The phone lasted me a good 5-6 hours of on-screen time while the A83 capped in at just 4hrs. This is quite a difference! Both the phones, however, pack an outdated USB Type 2.0 with no fast charging capabilities. Expect to stay plugged in for 2hrs or more with both the phones. Of course, the Y9 2018 with its larger battery will take a slightly longer time to fuel up.
Verdict: Huawei Y9 2018 VS Oppo A83 2018
From the above comparison, we can see that the Huawei Y9 2018 is better than the Oppo A83 in more ways than one. The Y9 2018 offers a better build, pixel-dense display, superior quad-cameras, a fingerprint scanner, and a larger battery than the A83 2018. Not to mention, that the Y9 2018 is almost Rs 1500 cheaper than its Oppo counterpart.
The Oppo A83 2018, however, doesn’t shy away, sporting a higher RAM and storage capacity, AI backed selfie shooter and a feature-packed software offering. But if I were in the market and had to pick one, I would without hesitation go with the Huawei Y9 2018. It definitely is superior among the two!
